Effects of different drying rates on the physiological quality of Coffea canephora Pierre seeds Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Rosa,Sttela Dellyzete Veiga Franco da; Brandão Júnior,Delacyr da Silva; Von Pinho,Édila Vilela de Resende; Veiga,André Delly; Silva,Luiz Hildebrando de Castro e.
Desiccation tolerance in seeds depends on the species, development stage and drying conditions, especially the water removal rate. Coffea seeds are considered of intermediate performance, because they tolerate relative dehydration compared to orthodox seeds and are sensitive to low temperatures. The objective of this study was to verify the effect of different drying rates on the viability and storability of Coffea canephora seeds. A complete randomized experimental design was used, in a factorial 3 x 5 x 2 design, with three drying rates (fast, intermediate and slow), five final mean water contents after drying (51, 42, 33, 22 and 15 %) and two storage temperatures (10 and 20°C). The germination and seed vigor assessments, using radicle protrusion,...

Evaluation of lignin content of soybean seed coat stored in a controlled environment Rev. bras. sementes
Krzyzanowski,Francisco Carlos; Franca Neto,José de Barros; Mandarino,Jose Marcos Gontijo; Kaster,Milton.
Breeding soybean for high seed quality is an important approach for developing cultivars for tropical regions, and the lignin content in the seed coat is one of the screening parameters for this trait. Considering that many breeding lines are evaluated in each growing season using the presently recommended method for lignin determination, a long period is required for the evaluation of the whole breeding program. This time limitation may influence lignin content assessment, if lignin is degraded during storage. This research reported was designed to determine whether lignin was degraded in the seed coat of soybean seed cultivars stored for one year in a controlled environment (10°C temperature and 50% air relative humidity). Seeds of 12 selected soybean...

Factors influencing seed germination in Cerrado grasses Acta Botanica
Kolb,Rosana Marta; Pilon,Natashi Aparecida Lima; Durigan,Giselda.
Few studies address the ecology of herbs of Cerrado grasslands, which are ecosystems where the long dry season, high temperatures, insolation, fire and invasive grasses greatly influencing germination and the establishment of plants. We assessed germination of 13 species of Poaceae from Cerrado grasslands under nursery conditions or in germination chambers, the latter with i) recently collected seeds and seeds after six months storage, ii) under constant and alternating temperatures, and iii) in the presence and absence of light. Germinability, mean germination time (MGT) and required light were quantified to elucidate factors involved in successful germination. Germinability was low for most grasses, probably because of low seed viability. For most...

Flash-drying for embryos desiccation PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Medeiros, Antonio Carlos de Souza; Abreu, Daniela Cleide Azevedo de.
Seeds of several tree species from Brazilian wet forest are in dangerous situation and show recalcitrant characteristics. Therefore, it is not possible to store them by traditional methods adopted with orthodox seeds and it limits their genetic resources ex-situ conservation in seed banks. This situation encourages researches to find news technologies in order to store these species in genebanks. Therein, flash-drying method for embryos desiccation shows to be a promising technique in order to resolve seed conservation of Brazilian endogenous tree species in genebanks. This paper has an objective of to become known the flash-drying technique and to be accessible to seed  physiologists

Increasing the rate of drying reduces metabolic imbalance, lipid peroxidation and critical water content in radicles of garden pea (Pisum sativum L.) Biol. Res.
Ntuli,Tobias M; Pammenter,Norman W; Berjak,Patricia.
Orthodox seeds become desiccation-sensitive as they undergo germination. As a result, germinating seeds serve as a model to study desiccation sensitivity in plant tissues. The effects of the rate of drying on the viability, respiratory metabolism and free radical processes were thus studied during dehydration and wet storage of radicles of Pisum sativum. For both drying regimes desiccation could be described by exponential and inverse modified functions. Viability, as assessed by germination capacity and tetrazolium staining, remained at 100% during rapid (< 24 h) desiccation. However, it declined sharply at c. 0.26 g g¹ dm following slow (c. 5 days) drying. Increasing the rate of dehydration thus lowered the critical water content for survival. Rapid...

Dantas,Ísis Barreto; Oliveira,João Almir de; Santos,Heloisa Oliveira dos; Pinho,Édila Vilela Resende Von; Rosa,Sttela Dellyzete Veiga Franco da.
Seed quality may be affected by several factors, including permeability, color, and lignin content in the seed coat. This study aimed at evaluating influence of lignin content in the tegument of seed samples of six different soybean cultivars, in which half of each sample was inoculated with the fungus Aspergillus flavus, on the physical and physiological quality, and on the seed health, during 180 days storage period, under cold chamber with controlled conditions of temperature and RH. For that, at each interval of 60 days, samples were removed, and the physiological quality of these seeds was assessed by means of moisture and lignin contents; and by tests of seed health, germination, and electrical conductivity. The moisture content of seeds remained...

Prediction of cottonseed longevity PAB
Usberti,Roberto; Roberts,Eric Hywel; Ellis,Richard Harold.
The objective of this work was to determine the viability equation constants for cottonseed and to detect the occurrence and depletion of hardseededness. Three seedlots of Brazilian cultivars IAC-19 and IAC-20 were tested, using 12 moisture content levels, ranging from 2.2 to 21.7% and three storage temperatures, 40, 50 and 65ºC. Seed moisture content level was reached from the initial value (around 8.8%) either by rehydration, in a closed container, or by drying in desiccators containing silica gel, both at 20ºC. Twelve seed subsamples for each moisture content/temperature treatment were sealed in laminated aluminium-foil packets and stored in incubators at those temperatures, until complete survival curves were obtained. Seed equilibrium relative...

Protein hydrophobic dressing on seeds aiming at the delay of undesirable germination Scientia Agricola
Assis,Odilio Benedito Garrido; Leoni,Ariane Maria.
Polymer seed-coatings have been largely tested as an alternative method for preventing diseases and have the potential to be used to control undesirable germination and thereby increasing seed storage. Amongst these, the protein-based coatings can be applied with advantage of forming stable biodegradable and hydrophobic films. Due to their chemical structure, protein dressings act as efficient barriers for water uptake, even when seeds are unavoidable exposed to a moist environment. In this work, the effect of hydrophobic dressings was tested on the germination rate of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) and broccolis (Brassica oleraceae var italic L.) seeds under laboratorial condition. Zein, natural maize (Zea mays L.) proteins extracted from gluten meal, was...

Seed conditioning of red oak: a recalcitrant North American seed Scientia Agricola
Struve,D.K..
A ten day aerated water soak was developed as a seed conditioning treatment for red oak (Quercus rubra L.). Conditioned seeds had higher germination completeness, uniformity and speed compared to control seeds. Seeds could be conditioned under a wide range of temperatures and durations. Conditioned seeds were maintained at 7(0)C for 30 days without loss of seed quality. During conditioning, pericarps split in response to seed hydration. Split pericarps could be used as a pre-sowing indicator for high quality seeds. Seed conditioning was ineffective on dormant seeds. Increased crop uniformity and higher stand establishment can be realized by subjecting red oak acorns to an aerated water soak treatment followed by selecting seeds with split pericarps. These...

Seed germination ecophysiology of the wild pineapple, Ananas ananassoides (Baker) L.B.Sm. (Bromeliaceae) Acta Botanica
Silveira,Fernando Augusto Oliveira; Santos,Jean Carlos; Fernandes,Geraldo Wilson.
In this study we investigated the effects of light, temperature, and storage on seed germination of the wild pineapple Ananasananassoides, an understorey species found in cerrado woodlands. Seeds were germinated at temperatures of 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 ºC and a 12-hr photoperiod and continuous darkness for 30-d. Seeds were photoblastic and the optimum temperatures for germination were 25 and 30 ºC. Seeds stored for 12-mo at room temperature and at 4 ºC were set to germinate at optimum conditions. Germinability of stored seeds did not differ from that of recently collected seeds, regardless of storage temperature, indicating their physiological potential for seed bank formation. Our results suggest that as in tropical rainforests, light may be an important...
